Aviate. Navigate. Communicate.
Many years ago, a pilot I met when he mistook me for a Singapore Airlines flight attendant told me about “Aviate. Navigate. Communicate.”
It’s a prioritization guide that pilots follow, especially in high-pressure situations. First, fly the aircraft (aviate), then figure out where you’re going (navigate), and only then, talk to the people involved (communicate).
I didn’t realize that I internalized and applied it to other non-flying life situations until recently. When I’m busy with a hands-on project (aviate), and not very sure where it’s going (navigate), I tend to put a hold on talking (or even writing) (communicate).
What do you think about “aviate, navigate, communicate” in your life?
How important is communication as part of the aviation and navigation process?
